Curry County Sheriff John Bishop
Sheriff John Bishop has exhibited strong leadership and driven selfless service during his term as Sheriff. This is especially true during the past year. Sheriff Bishop's efforts during this year ensured that the Curry County Sheriff's Office continues to provide excellent public safety service to the citizens of Curry County, despite the threat of loss of funding to provide those services. Sheriff Bishop's determined leadership has bolstered the flagging morale of staff and citizens who fear the loss of jobs, public safety, and the excellent quality of life enjoyed by Curry County residents. Sheriff Bishop's public presence has been a mainstay for citizens to rally around in times of fear and uncertainty. This was demonstrated during the March Tsunami that severely damaged the Port of Brookings Harbor, where Sheriff Bishop's presence helped prevent the loss of life when he stood firm denying citizens who demanded to return to the port before it was safe to do so. Had they been allowed to, some would likely have perished as the largest wave surges had yet to come.
In addition to his strong leadership this past year, The Sheriff has been a very busy man doing the work of OSSA. Sheriff Bishop has logged thousands of miles travelling around the state in his commitment to the work of the Sheriffs' Association. Sheriff Bishop is chair of two committees, Search & Rescue and Marine, is a member at large on the OSSA Executive Committee, and is liaison for OSSA to the Oregon Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP). Sheriff Bishop has been a strong voice for the interest of OSSA in all of his committee and liaison duties. His personality and demeanor facilitate cooperation and teamwork when issues of conflict arise, and his efforts to build and strengthen relationships have resulted in a stronger OSSA, and a stronger Curry County Sheriff's Office.
Of additional note is Sheriff Bishop's leadership in regional search and rescue efforts. Curry County is one of the nine counties that make up the California Oregon Search & Rescue (CORSAR) membership, and his personal commitment to that entity's continued success has helped save many lives both inside and outside of Curry County.
Serving from a small county, Sheriff John Bishop has stepped up and made the commitment to impact the larger issues affecting all Oregon Sheriffs.
