About Sheriff Bergin:

Sheriff Bergin was elected to the Office of Sheriff in 2004 and was sworn in as the 31st Sheriff to Clatsop County in January 2005. Sheriff Bergin has been in law enforcement for over 25 years and is currently serving his second 4 year term as Sheriff. He began his law enforcement career working patrol for the Seaside Police Department with a passion directed towards removing narcotics from vehicles related to drug transportation. In 1992 he joined the Clatsop County Sheriff's Office as a Patrol Deputy and started the first Narcotic Canine unit. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and in 1995 was asked to rebuild the Clatsop County Inter-Agency Narcotic Task Force. The team became very successful and in 2001 won Narcotic Agency of the year through the Western States Information Network (WISN). He returned to the road in 2003 and shortly thereafter was promoted to the rank of Chief Deputy, second in command, where he worked closely with former Sheriff, John Raichl.

Sheriff Bergin sees a great need to continue the law enforcement efforts to combat all illegal narcotic use. A major key to law enforcement in the county is replacement of the present jail which is inadequate for today's needs. Tom believes that education plays a key roll in preventing crime and drug use. One of his immediate goals is to continue the efforts with the Drug Task Force and the local DARE program that the Sheriff's Deputies operate in the local grade schools.

Sheriff Bergin lives with his wife and has two children. He enjoys hunting, horses, dogs and whenever a good friend may stop by to sit around the fire pit and swapping old stories.

"My door has always be open to the people of Clatsop County to help them with their law enforcement needs and I enjoy helping resolve their issues whenever possible," Bergin says.

Spring, 2013 – The newest member of the Sheriff’s Office is Pax! He and his handler, Senior Deputy Thomas Phillips, have completed a 400-hour patrol K-9 academy and are state certified through the Oregon Police K-9 Association. Their first day back on patrol, Deputy Phillips and Pax responded to a house in the Knappa area, which several people had broken into. Pax was able to track and capture two of the suspects. Deputy Phillips and Pax are available to respond and assist all police agencies county-wide.
