Sheriff Bergin was elected to replace retiring Clatsop County Sheriff John Raichl. Sheriff Bergin, age 46, has been in Clatsop County law enforcement for nearly 20 years the last 14 with the Clatsop County Sheriff's Office.
He began his law enforcement career working narcotics for the Seaside Police Department before joining the Sheriff's Office. He gained the rank of Chief Deputy a position of second in command of the agency working closely with former Sheriff John Raichl.
Sheriff Bergin sees a great need to continue the law enforcement efforts to combat Methamphetamine manufacture and use. A major key to law enforcement in the county is replacement of the present jail which is inadequate for today's needs. Tom believes that education plays a key roll in preventing crime and drug use. One of his immediate goals is to continue the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program that the sheriff operates in the local grade schools.
Sheriff Bergin lives with his wife and has two children, born and raised in Clatsop County.
"My door will always be open to the people of Clatsop County to help them with their law enforcement need," Bergin said.
