Executive Director's Message
Holly Russell, Executive Director, OSSA
I hope readers will enjoy this
issue of the Oregon Sheriff.
We’ve attempted to both
entertain and educate with the
articles, and I am certain that
we will hear from you if we’ve
missed the mark on either. One
article in the magazine outlines
the problems associated with
Measure 80, the ballot measure
that would legalize marijuana
in Oregon. The Sheriffs of
Oregon felt it appropriate to
breakdown the different elements
of the measure in order
to clarify its potential impact
on the state if it were to pass on
November 6th. Like all voting
decisions, the choice is yours,
but we hope you will be better
prepared when casting your
vote after reading this article.
This issue also highlights a
unique project in Multnomah
County that is saving taxpayer
dollars by focusing on sustainability.
This is a perfect
example of how “thinking
outside the box” allowed
Sheriff Staton and his staff to
make business decisions that
improved the bottom line of
their jail budget, while protecting
the environment at the
same time.
In the summer issue of Oregon
Sheriff, we introduced you
to the Sheriffs’ Sale program,
an internet site that a creditor
can choose to advertise the
sale of property ordered to
satisfy a judgment through a
judicial process. I am pleased
to announcement that website
visits to the site increased by
81% between July, the first full
month of service, and October
1st. Please take a few minutes
to check out the site by visiting
http://www.oregonsheriffs.
com/sales.htm.
I’d like to remind members
that the 2013 membership
renewal campaign will begin
mid-January 2013. This
campaign, which in the past
occurred during the fall
months, was moved to the first
of the calendar year to both
disperse the OSSA staff work
load, and in an effort to avoid
the holiday season which can
be financially burdensome
for many families. In future
magazines, OSSA will include
a “calendar” of fundraising
events so members know when
to expect campaign material
from Oregon’s Sheriffs. We
hope this information will be
useful to you. Please never
hesitant to contact OSSA about
material you receive, especially
to confirm its legitimacy. As
one of our valued members, we
always welcome your comments
and your questions.
Finally, please remember to
always drive safely, especially
in school zones and during
Halloween, when children can
be easily distracted by friends,
their costumes or their treats!
