Graduated from Soldotna High School in Soldotna, Alaska in 1984. Served on active duty U.S. Army from June 1984 to June 1987, attending Basic Training, AIT, Jump School and then stationed at Ft. Bragg, NC. Sheriff McDonald was Honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in June of 1987.
Hired by Lake County Sheriff's Department September 18, 1989, as a Corrections Officer. Promoted to Patrol Deputy November 30, 1992. Was the resident Deputy in Christmas Valley and Silver Lake from November 1992 until November 1998. Appointed County Sheriff on June 29, 2001.

Summer, 2014 – The Lake County Sheriff’s Office received a new
boat for marine patrol from the State Marine Board
to help marine law enforcement patrolling the
county’s high elevation lakes. The Marine Board
recently procured a special purpose skiff to help Lake
County’s marine patrols access waterways in
The new patrol boat is a 14-foot River Hawk open
skiff, with a 20 horsepower Suzuki fuel-injected
outboard motor. This boat is easy to transport and
trailer on remote roads, and will operate at a fraction
of the fuel costs used by our previous boat. The
River Hawk was purchased with a combination of
county dollars and a trade in value of the old
Memorial Day weekend saw about 500 persons
camped in the Christmas Valley sand dunes.
With the exception of two ATV crashes, everyone
had a safe and fun weekend. We also saw full
campgrounds throughout the Fremont Forest, with
people recreating in various manors from ATV’s to
fishing and boating, hiking, and just relaxing and
enjoying the outdoors.
