OREGON SHERIFF Magazine News
Summer, 2010 -- The Marion County Sheriff's Office Aggressive Driving Program is part of our Enforcement Division's Traffic Safety Team (TST). Presently, the TST uses two unmarked Mustangs. These vehicles allow the deputies to monitor driver behavior, often viewing multiple violations in succession by the driver, and then take correctiveaction.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration defines aggressive driving as "when individuals commit a combination of moving traffic offenses so as to endanger other persons or property." Some behaviors typically associated with aggressive driving include speeding, following too closely, unsafe lane changes and failure to obey a traffic device.
The MCSO Traffic Safety Team uses the principal of the 3-E's to guide the unit: enforcement, education and engineering. The TST works collaboratively with the Oregon Department of Transportation, the Oregon State Police, local law enforcement agencies to provide enforcement, partners with the community to provide educational programs, and works with the Marion County Public Works Department to improve roadway design and signage.
During 2009, TST cited drivers for the following offenses: Careless Driving (182), Reckless Driving (2), Speeds Exceeding 30mph (244), Speeds Exceeding 100mph (43), and Following too Close (135). There were 12 Fatal Crashes in 2009 (as of 11/30/09).
The Traffic Safety Team is dedicated to reducing serious and fatal crashes through enforcement, education and engineering. Each serious injury or fatal crash influences insurance factors for the region. More importantly, each crash results in severe emotional damage to members of our community, and the value of a life lost cannot be calculated.
