He has served in a variety of areas, including Marine patrol, Detectives, School Resource Officer, and SWAT. He went to Salem Police Department in 1999, where he was quickly promoted to Corporal, Sergeant, and then Lieutenant. While at Salem Police Department, Sheriff Isham focused on Community Policing with the Crime Prevention Unit, in addition to working on the Street Crimes Unit. In 2007, he received the prestigious Public Safety Award from the Salem Chamber of Commerce for his work with the Crime Prevention Unit. Winter, 2007 -- Violence, drug use and drinking at Chemewa Indian School have dropped dramatically under an arrangement that has Marion County Sheriff's deputies providing security. Three full-time deputies have patrolled the school's 400-acre campus north of Salem since the beginning of 2006. The biggest impact deputies have seems to be through their presence. "Each and every day these guys are here, you see more kids coming up and engaging with them," said John Claymore, supervisor of the school.
