OREGON SHERIFF Magazine News

Spring, 2008 -- A Rufus, Oregon resident is being charged in Sherman County following a Grand Jury indictment for Robbery in the 2nd degree: a Measure 11 crime.

Last October, a person wearing a hooded sweatshirt with a covered face, walked into the J&J Mini-Mart in Rufus claiming he had a gun and demanded money. The masked man fled on foot after receiving no money.

The Sherman, Klickitat and Skamania County Sheriff's Offices and the Oregon State Police responded to the scene. After a four hour search for the suspect the search was called off. After an extensive investigation by Sherman County Deputy Tim Schnider, the suspect, Antonio Salas-Ortiz, 20, was arrested in December during a traffic stop on I-84.

Sheriff Brad Lohrey said that: "Deputy Schneider took the lead in the case and because of his due diligence and attentiveness, the case was solved and a serious criminal was taken off of the street."
