OREGON SHERIFF Magazine News

Summer, 2010 -- The good news is the 2010-11 Sheriff's Office operating budget has been approved; however, the bad news is a distressing reduction of $540,000 resulting in the loss of four jail positions.

Our focus is to maintain capacity levels through short-term reductions to our inmate population, which may be a necessity to continue state required inmate to staff ratio levels. As strenuous as it was to withstand the requested reductions, next year's funding challenges could possibly be even more restricting.

My continued mission as Sheriff is to maintain current staffing levels in the Criminal Patrol Division; therefore, any future budget cuts will affect jail personnel and directly impact the inmate population. The Sheriff's Office team continues to pursue additional funding sources and explore cost saving measures.

Congratulations to the Rural Neighborhood Watch Program and the "Spofford Unit," a new unit located out of Milton-Freewater who recently completed their training.
